As people age, changes, stresses, and losses can affect their emotional well being. Older people and their families can be reluctant to seek mental health care although isolation, poor health, and excessive family strain can put older people at risk for mental and physical decline.

Interac's Geriatric Counseling Service reaches out to the older person in the community through our clinical social workers to provide mental health evaluation and counseling services in a supportive and non-threatening manner. Any of the following may indicate a need for mental health evaluation by our clinicians:

• Complaints of feeling lonely, blue, hopeless, or overwhelmed

• Sudden changes in behavior

• Difficulties with concentration and/or memory

• Family changes or losses

Services are available to older people 60 or better living in North and West Philadelphia. Home visits or Senior Center visits can be arranged. Privacy and confidentiality are assured.

Services are provided, in part, through the Philadelphia Office of Mental Health, Philadelphia Corporation for the Aging and covered by Medicare, and other insurers as applicable.
