Family Living Programs

Intercommunity Action, Inc. (Interac) began operating Family Living Programs (FLP) in 1998. The program is similar to a foster care arrangement in that a family takes into their home another person (a consumer) who happens to have a developmental disability. Since the family takes on the additional responsibility of caring for the individual as a part of their family, the Office of Mental Health / Mental Retardation pays the family a monthly stipend.

This monthly stipend varies  in the amount depending upon the specific needs of the individual consumer. However, it typically covers food expenses, recreational costs, respite care and other costs associated with making that individual part of the family.

The expectation from both the Office of Mental Health / Mental Retardation and Interac, as the provider agency, is that this 'new' family provides a safe and clean living environment; ensures the consumer's hygiene needs, clothing requirements and meal schedules are met; ensures adequate supervision is provided; includes the consumer  as a member of the family and permits periodic visits from the Agency staff and regulatory agencies as necessary.

If you or someone you know is interested in becoming a Family Living Program provider or if you want additional information, please contact the Community Homes Services (CHS) Director at the Developmental Disabilities Division Office which is located at 4120 Tower St., Philadelphia, PA 19127 or call (215) 487-1982.
